Towards a sustainable economy!
The global population is growing, our standard of living is increasing and we are faced with environmental challenges such as anthropogenic climate change, ocean litter, a declining availability of arable land and dwindling fossil resources. This requires us to transform today’s oil based economy towards the sustainable use of renewable resources, that is to say, towards the bioeconomy!
The necessity of this change is already widely accepted. The right time has come to talk about how we want to shape this change, which is why Science Year 2020 will focus on the bioeconomy.
What can we do to live more sustainably and save resources while also maintaining our standard of living? How can science and technology support us on this path? Science Year 2020 gives the public the opportunity to experience potential solutions that have already emerged from research. Many new technologies and procedures can help us produce, process and utilize resources and products differently in the future. Whether it is plant based building and insulation materials, pollutant degrading microorganisms, kerosene substitutes made from algae or self decomposing plastics.
With the Science Year, we give you the opportunity to experience these first steps towards a bio based economy hands on. Together with you, we will set out to highlight the many different aspects of the bioeconomy. We have a broad range of methods for sharing knowledge in a way that is easy to understand including films, online formats and critical discussions. We invite you to get involved in our public projects, competitions and youth campaigns.
Numerous institutions, educational establishments, universities and businesses will also take part in the Science Year. So please join in! Use this opportunity to have your say, find out more about the bioeconomy and discuss with researchers, policy makers, celebrities and experts in the field of science communication about how we can create a more sustainable future.
