About Science Year 2026 – Medicine of the Future

Health is one of the most important prerequisites for a good life. In the Science Year 2026 – Medicine of the Future, you can discover how researchers are already shaping the medicine of tomorrow with their ideas and solutions – a medicine that is preventive, personalized, digital, and participatory.

How can we improve prevention strategies so that we become ill less often and less severely? How can innovative technologies and artificial intelligence support diagnostics and therapy without losing sight of the human being? In the medicine of the future, the individual needs of patients and more effective treatments take center stage. A special focus of the Science Year is on gender-sensitive research, which will enable women to receive tailored medical care in the future.

We invite you to take part in events, projects, and activities. Discover, discuss, and shape the medicine of the future together with representatives from science, research, business, media, and politics – for the health of tomorrow!

Organizers and Initiators

The Science Year is a joint initiative of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt, BMFTR) and Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD) the German organization for science communication. For more than two decades, they foster the dialogue between the public and researches about many different research topics.

The initiative relies on a great number of partners, who demonstrate their valuable work via our platforms and channels. Ahead of the Science Year, a steering committee (Begleitkreis) exchanges ideas and objectives for each year.

Wissenschaft im Dialog

Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD) is the organization for science communication in Germany. The non-profit limited liability company supports the scientific community with expertise in effective communication with society, develops new communication formats and also supports scientists in engaging with the public, including on controversial research topics. WiD increases public awareness of the role of science for society, and it promotes understanding of the processes involved in research and its outcomes. To achieve this aim, WiD organizes discussions, school projects, exhibitions, and competitions throughout Germany and also operates online portals about science and science communication.

Aim of the Science Years

The aim of the Science Years is to foster the public dialogue on relevant research topics. Scientific developments shall become more transparent and accessible to the general public. Additionally, the Science Years aim to initiate and drive the debate about these very developments.

Initially, the Science Years’ focus was on individual disciplines. Examples include the Year of Mathematics or the Year of Humanities. Since 2010, the Science Years have addressed topics relevant to the future across subjects and disciplines. These have included health research, research on the future of the digital society, seas and oceans, artificial intelligence, and our universe.
